River Farm in Alexandria, Virginia, is one of the nation’s premier historical sites. In 1747, George Washington chose the land that is now River Farm for his family home. Born in nearby Westmoreland County, Virginia, Washington felt a deep connection to this region as his mother’s family had previously owned property not far from River Farm. The house predating River Farm, Ferry Plantation, served as an important part of Washington’s youth. Here, Washington learned to farm, fell in love with horses, and forged his lifelong passion for the outdoors.

The change would come to the property when, in 1799, the seven-acre dwelling was sold to William Pearce, who renamed it Mount Vernon Farm. After Pearse’s death in 1820, the farm went through a series of owners who quietly maintained and steered the property until it was purchased by the American Horticultural Society in 1973 with the intention of preserving it for future generations.
Upon acquiring the land, the American Horticultural Society set about restoring the house and planting a full of flowers, trees, and shrubbery. The Center for Historic Plants was established, and with it, the preservation of some of our county’s oldest botanicals. Today, one can find a variety of heirloom roses, evergreens, and other classic plants in the garden, a reminder of the legends that have passed through these very grounds and the timelessness of River Farm’s natural beauty. In addition to its breathtaking gardens, River Farm also hosts a number of public events and activities throughout the year. Annual events such as Sunset Serenades and Art in the Garden are popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Visitors can also participate in a range of youth education programs, workshops, and guided hikes.
River Farm also features an expansive farmhouse that pays homage to the home of George and Martha Washington. There are several beautiful beds, a game room, and a striking Parlor that demands attention. Accents such as an elegant wooden mantle and wainscoting add a contemporary flair to the space. In the front room, guests can enjoy a relaxing view of the Potomac or walk the lounge area filled with couches, armchairs, and music. The beauty and serenity of River Farm cannot be understated.
